Overview
Welcome to Prairie Sky Guest & Game Ranch! Where the grass meets the sky...
Prairie Sky Ranch is 2000 acres of rolling hills and wooded coulees located in the hills of northeastern South Dakota. You’ll enjoy the outdoors as never before as you take in the scenery saddled up on a horse riding the Coteau des Prairie plains. From the ranch you can see two other states and almost touch the stars at night. Guests always ask “Where did you get this sky?” They are in awe of the night time spectacular show in this sky on the prairie. More than 120 lakes dot this northeaster part of the state. If fishing is your game, anglers who travel to this ranch country find the walleye, northern pike and perch test their ability.
The ranch welcomes families, friends, couples, and singles for horseback vacations June through August. Guests and crew meet at the main lodge for a hearty breakfast of pancakes and bacon, or biscuits with sausage gravy, French toast and ham or omelets to ready you for the morning two hour ride. The string of horses consists of all quarter horse geldings and range from beginner to intermediate and advanced. You’ll be fit to a horse well-suited for you. After a light lunch and a short rest, you’re back in the saddle again for a two hour ride. Be sure to bring a camera on the ride as you’ll want plenty of pictures of the 300 buffalo that call Prairie Sky their home. You’ll have plenty of time to freshen up for the evening meal or relax on the front porch of your cabin. Perhaps you’d enjoy a glass of wine or beer in the lounge or in the rocking chairs on the front deck of the main lodge to watch the sunset and visit with the crew and other guests. Wednesday nights will feature “pitchfork steak fry” open to the public, which all will enjoy. If a wagon ride with the team of horses interests you, you can even handle the reins along side the guide. By evening you’ll be looking for a soft place and the cozy cabins have all the amenities.
Prairie Sky Guest & Game Ranch also features a girl’s horse camp for ages 9-16 years old. The goal is to significantly increase the confidence levels and ability of every girl. They do this by riding an average of six hours each day. The difference private instruction makes is dramatic. They have horses with many different levels of ability and make sure to match each rider with a horse that fits her needs. There is an outdoor arena for training and instruction regarding barrel racing and pole bending. At the end of the week, all the girls participate in a horse show so parents can see what they’ve learned. Other activities include swimming, overnight campouts, midnight ride, hayride, pajama party, games, and crafts.
Summertime at Prairie Sky Ranch is loaded with fun activities. From a leisurely trail ride or an invigorating round of golf at the nearby courses; from watching the sunrises on your porch or evening bonfires… there’s always something to do. For many, summer is the time to enjoy it all! For others, it’s a time to kick back and do nothing at all. Regardless, Prairie Sky promises a good time and special memories.
